Boyfriend For Hire : Chapter One

I should probably introduce myself before I launch into this sordid tale of rivalry, love, and family. Hi readers, my name is Donnie Adegboye, Donnie is short for Donatella. I am the first daughter of my parents; Daniel and Deidra Adegboye. Eight years after I was born, my mum died while giving birth to my baby brother; Dotun Adegboye. Yeah, you’ve guessed it- we are a family of Ds.

I was very close to my mother, we did everything together, and I considered her my best friend. Her death hit me hard and I became even more of a recluse than I used to be.

I’m sure you’re wondering, why will a young girl consider an older woman her best friend? You see, I am what people call ‘A tomboy.’ My favorite thing to do was reading, climbing trees, and picking fights with boys. Because of my unusual interests, I didn’t have a lot of girlfriends, in fact, I had none.

So, my mother would read and discuss each novel with me, cheer me on as I climbed the trees in the orchard in our backyard, and treat my injuries from different scuffles with boys. My baby brother had to live with Dad’s sister till he was four and old enough to return to Dad and I.

A year later, as my 13th birthday approached, Dad gave us the seemingly good news- he was getting married again.
Honestly, I didn’t really know how to feel about the incoming wife and her teenage daughter; she was a divorcee with a 14 year old daughter. Books and movies didn’t really give me the impression that step mothers could be anything other than wicked. I was a tomboy, so I didn’t like fairytales, but even I knew that Cinderella, Snowhite, and God knows who else, had wicked stepmothers.

I was just 13, I couldn’t really object now, could I? So, Dotun and I had to ‘be happy’ for him and the incoming step-monster, I mean stepmother.

When I met Teju, I was happy and disappointed at the same time. I mean, she was so pleasant and different from what books and movies portrayed. Teju’s daughter on the other hand, a different story entirely.

Anthonia is Teju’s daughter and my stepsister. When we were introduced in front of the family, she was the epitome of angelic daughter. Sweet, kind, all smiles, and just plain glamorous. Beside Tonia, I felt like a ragdoll. I never really cared about my looks, and I was always in jean and shirts half of the time.

My stepsister oozed feminine qualities and she was the daughter my father wished he had. Behind all that façade though, Tonia was the most conniving, manipulative, and condescending girl I ever met. When she resumed newly at my school, all my friends (boys) wanted to be her friend.

I was back to being the outcast. She would make fun of me in school, wiggle out of chores and homework, then blame me for everything that went wrong at home. Dotun didn’t really care for her and she didn’t care for him either. The rivalry eventually came to a log head when we were both 15 and 16 respectively, and in SS3.

I liked the smartest boy in my class, who coincidentally turned out to be the cutest boy also. His name was Ben Matthews. Usually, I’ve never had to worry about the way I acted whenever I was with the boys, but since the feelings for Ben came up, I was so conscious.

Every morning before leaving the house, I would put beads in my cornrows, apply brown powder generously, use lip gloss, and apply gel on my lashes. I told people to call me Ella or the full name because Donnie was just too boyish. The guys noticed something was different and it didn’t take them too long to decipher the new mystery behind my appearance.

Unfortunately, like everything I’ve always wanted, Ben somehow found his way into Tonia’s arms and my very soul was crushed. I swallowed my pride and cornered him one afternoon after closing, and what he said shook me to my core.

“Oh come on Donnie. Tonia is so beautiful… I mean, not that you aren’t, but her beauty does not look forced you know.”
I had to look at myself that very moment.

“She’s just herself. Frankly, I liked you better when you weren’t trying so hard to be something you aren’t. I’m sorry Donnie.”

The guys found me crying at the school volleyball court and comforted me. Since then, I told myself, I would never change to please anyone, and I would never aim for something Tonia could ever get.

Now, as at the time of this story, I was 26 years old, I was a successful architect, and I was very single and contented.

So, welcome to BFH. Sorry, for the short intro, but it’ll get better and longer, I hope. So, comment and share the link with anyone you think would love this genre.
